For proper storing, the apples should be firm and free of bruises.  Apples keep best when stored in a refrigerator or cooler. When saving apples they should be placed in ventilated bags or in a humidified drawer. Apples left at room temperature will ripen 10 times faster than ones stored around forty degrees. If you are storing your apples elsewhere, place a heavy damp cloth over them. This is done to prevent them from shriveling. Always remove over-ripe apples to prevent your apples from rotting. Wash your apples under warm water for 15 seconds or more before eating or cooking.
